PECO receives industry honors for innovative system repair approach

First of its kind transmission system issue requires commitment to safety, teamwork and innovation

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- PECO was recognized by the Southeastern Electric Exchange with its Industry Excellence Award in the Transmission category at the organization's conference and trade show in Orlando, Florida this week. This award is given annually by the Exchange to the project it deems "best of the best" among all entrants in this category.

PECO was honored for its response to an emergent repair to an underground 220 kilovolt transmission line located in North Philadelphia in March 2012. The first of its kind in the more than 120-year history of the company, the complex repair required support from more than eight different PECO departments, local contractors, and employees from the company's sister utility ComEd, in Chicago. PECO sister company, BGE in Baltimore, Md., also received S.E.E. awards in the Safety and Rates and Regulations categories.

"I'm extremely proud of the team of employees and contractors who came together to collaboratively work to make this repair and ensure continued reliable service for our customers," said John McDonald, vice president of PECO Technical Services. "The infrastructure that provides electric service to tens of millions of customers throughout the United States is incredibly complex, and complex issues sometimes require innovative solutions. This was one of those instances."

After returning the transmission line to service following a scheduled outage, an issue occurred along a two-mile stretch of the underground portion of the cable, leaving several large multi-service customers with one single service. PECO crews utilized a special listening device to identify the location of the damage, used innovative techniques to safely expose the damaged portion of the cable, and coordinated the installation of a new section of cable - a complex task that took nearly two weeks to complete.

The Southeastern Electric Exchange Industry Excellence Awards are given annually in 11 different categories from substation, environmental, and production, to distribution. Award submissions are reviewed by an industry panel and are evaluated for achievement, innovation, improvement, requirements, and technical complexity.

PECO has received numerous industry honors recently including; the Emergency Recovery Award from the Edison Electric Institute in 2011 and 2012, the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award in 2012 and 2013, and the 2012 American Gas Association Safety Achievement Award. The company is consistently recognized within the industry for its top decile safety performance and top quartile reliability for electric and natural gas service. The company also is frequently honored for its commitment to diversity and inclusion and community impact.
