The Lowrie Award was initiated in 2007 and is presented every three years in remembrance of Ernestine M. Lowrie, R.N., who laid the foundation for nursing leadership and commitment to quality patient care at FMCNA, and helped establish the company's outpatient dialysis programs. This year's winners were honored for their dedication to clinical excellence on June 12 at an awards presentation and dinner at the company's headquarters in Waltham, Mass.

"Each of these nurses embodies our UltraCare mission of delivering exceptional, patient-centered care, and we're proud to honor them with this award," said Simon Castellanos, executive vice president and president of Fresenius Medical Services. "Fresenius Medical Care is committed to empowering staff to excel in their positions, and these clinical managers showcase the values that drive our company's culture."

Winners were nominated by their division managers and selected based on the following clinical leadership and nursing contributions:

  • Parker is trusted and respected by physicians, colleagues and patients alike at Fresenius Medical Care Denver Central. For almost a decade she's led this inner-city facility, while achieving outstanding clinical outcomes and receiving honors from the Intermountain ESRD Network. A strong patient advocate, Parker also has partnered with a local non-profit to provide free dental screenings and dental work for patients at the clinic.

  • Decky's colleagues praise the culture she has created at Fresenius Medical Care Fairmount of treating all patients with dignity and respect, and her cool composure despite the stress of operating in one of Philadelphia's most poverty-stricken areas. During her 29 years with FMCNA, she's mentored many team members and has seven employees who have worked for her for more than 10 years. Recently, she used quality indicators to identify patient "outliers," then created teams to work intensively with these patients to improve their condition.

  • Moody-Lagasse, a dialysis nurse for 19 years, brings a quiet energy and dedication to the development of her team at Fresenius Medical Care Casco Bay, where several patient care technicians have gone on to become nurses. Medical directors and attending physicians often seek her advice on handling difficult situations at the clinic, which has received multiple honors from the ESRD Network of New England. Moody-Lagasse makes it a priority to bring fun into patients' care routines by organizing games, celebrating holidays and recognizing patient honors and achievements throughout the year.

  • Capuyan's strength as a leader is evidenced by her recent 100 percent employee retention rate at Fresenius Medical Care Gulfport. During her 20 years with FMCNA, she's consistently shown care, concern and empathy for her patients. Capuyan's willingness to embrace new challenges and deliver high-quality results leads her local management team to call her a "genuine diamond."
