Most people wouldn't think of heading south for the summer, but a new flash sale and promotional amenities at hotels in warmer climes may make tourists willing to stand the heat.

On June 21, the day of the solstice and the first official day of summer, 20 hotels are offering discounted rates on reservations made for stays over the summer, and in some cases, until the end of the year. Billed as Cyber Summer, the event showcases hotels and resorts in regions that have traditionally seen low visitation during the summer months: Florida, Mexico, the Caribbean, Latin America, and South Africa.

The properties include specific locations of chains like Marriott (MAR), which has several hotels and resorts participating in the promotion with discounted rates and resort credits. Smaller properties, like the Kura Hulanda Resort in Curacao, are also included.

The deals vary by location. Some hotels are offering only a reduced rate, others include resort credits, while still others include a complimentary spa treatment or round of golf.

Brooke Hoffman, a spokeswoman for Diamond PR, which organized the event, says Cyber Summer builds on the success of hotel promotions through last year's Cyber Monday, the post-Thanksgiving online sales event. Although this is the first year of the Cyber Summer campaign, Hoffman expects it to become an annual affair.

A tip for booking hot destinations for the summer: According to the folks at Kayak.com, travelers shouldn't assume hotels come with air conditioning or a pool, or that both are in working order. When making a reservation, a quick call or email to the property to confirm amenities are included is always wise, especially when heading south at the height of the summer.

Even when getting a seemingly great hotel rate, it's important to avoid hidden resort fees, and ensure other aspects of a trip don't overwhelm the budget. Travelers should compare all rates against a variety of sites before booking, and include the costs of getting to and from their destination when considering an overall trip budget.

The sale began at midnight and runs through 11:59 p.m. EDT. Blackout dates apply.
