Kentucky American Water Receives National Awards for Excellence in Water Quality
LEXINGTON, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Kentucky American Water is proud to announce the achievement of two Phase III Directors Awards from the Partnership for Safe Water for its Kentucky River Station I and Richmond Road Station water treatment plants in Fayette County. The awards were presented to company representatives, Dorothy Johnson of the water quality team and Mitzi Combs, supervisor of the Kentucky River Station I treatment plant, during the 2013 American Water Works Association Annual Conference in Denver, Co., this week.
The Partnership for Safe Water Program is a voluntary initiative developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other water organizations designed to increase protection of the public by encouraging partner utilities to meet requirements that are more stringent than what is required by law through total plant optimization. Only about three percent of all public surface water plants are part of the program, and with a total of 80 plants in the partnership, American Water subsidiaries account for 20 percent of the participating plants nationwide. American Water is the parent company of Kentucky American Water.
As a member of the Partnership for Safe Water, Kentucky American Water demonstrates its commitment to improving the quality of drinking water delivered to customers by optimizing system operations. Its Kentucky River Station I and Richmond Road Station water treatment plants were recognized for maintaining the Phase III Directors Award status for 15 years.

The company's newest water treatment facility, the Kentucky River Station II at Hardin's Landing in Owen County, which began operation in 2010, joined the Partnership for Safe Water in December of that same year and meets the same exceptional water quality standards as the utility's two Fayette County plants. The company is in the process of completing the extensive Phase III application process for this facility, which includes evaluation of every component of the plant. The facility will be eligible for the Directors Award as soon as this process is completed.
