Chevron Wins 2013 "Best of the Best" IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award

Award announcement caps successful IHS EHS & Sustainability Solution Workshop in Houston

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IHS (NYS: IHS) , the leading global source of information and analysis, today announced that Chevron was selected as the "Best of the Best" among this year's IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award winners based on its innovative use of information systems and best practices to achieve environmental, health, safety and sustainability (EHS&S) business goals. Chevron's team accepted the award during a ceremony at the IHS EHS&S Solutions Workshop in Houston on June 11.

"IHS congratulates Chevron for showing how enterprise-level operational risk information solutions can be successfully leveraged across a multi-faceted global organization," said Scott Lockhart, IHS Vice President of EHS and Sustainability. "Chevron's proven ability to enhance critical decision-making and achieve world-class performance through a comprehensive strategy for Enterprise Sustainability Management that drives Operational Excellence will serve as a model for all kinds of businesses around the world."

Chevron, one of the world's largest integrated energy companies, is renowned for its leadership in promoting a culture of safety and environmental stewardship through a strong, ongoing commitment to Operational Excellence. In 2011, Chevron's upstream and downstream businesses both implemented IHS IMPACT ERM® software for operational risk management in combination with its own groundbreaking Data Analysis and Reporting Tool (DART) warehouse and legacy systems. By creating a unified incident analysis and reporting system that serves more than 26,000 users company-wide, Chevron has:

  • Enhanced health, environmental and safety (HES) business intelligence across the enterprise by providing quality data and historical trend analysis as well as greater transparency and accountability.

  • Provided HES key performance indicators (KPIs) for quarterly and annual corporate sustainability reporting based on Global Reporting Initiative and American Petroleum Institute guidelines.

  • Improved incident analysis and reporting workflows by continually standardizing and driving efficiency - e.g. archiving 12 systems for Management of Change (MOC).

In 2012, Chevron's performance in Days Away from Work injury rates (DAFWR) and Total Recordable Incident rates (TRIR) were among the best of its peers. Between 2004 and 2012, the company's DAFWR declined by 78 percent and TRIR rate dropped 53 percent.

"We are proud to accept this IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award," said Bob Bollinger, HES Global Business Information System Manager at Chevron." Our ability to capture quality data and generate critical analysis and reporting helps us highlight the company's outstanding incident management metrics to the investor community...Chevron's documented leadership in operational excellence has given us a real competitive edge."

A total of 23 organizations around the world were honored with IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Awards in 2013. In addition to Chevron, this year's winners included ADCO, ADGAS, Alcoa, Anadarko Petroleum, Archer Daniels Midland, CenterPoint Energy, Drom Fragrances, Eagle Rock Energy Partners, Eastern Municipal Water District, Enginetics Aerospace, Enterprise Products, Fugro, Husky Energy, Lloyd's Register, PSC Industrial Outsourcing, PSEG, Rust-Oleum Europe, Santee Cooper, Spectra Energy, Total PetroChemicals & Refining USA, Vale, and Yara International.

The IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Awards gala banquet was just one of many highlights from the recent EHS&S Solution Workshop. Top EHS and IT professionals, industry experts, business executives and other decision makers participated in more than 50 sessions across eight topical tracks -- looking at how information management solutions that combine software, content and expertise can drive continuous improvement across an organization.

IHS also announced the launch of its newly enhanced customer portal, which is called the EHS&S Customer Network (ECN). The new ECN has an updated look and feel that will make the portal easier to use as well as technological and performance improvements including the ability to: select which product or products users wish to receive notifications on, personalize their ECN experience, view expanded online ticket updates and reporting (including graphical KPIs), and a host of other features. The enhanced portal will still be located at ECN.IHS.com.
