GE Mobilizes 500 Volunteers and Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Developing Health Program in Detroit

GE shows its commitment to the Detroit community and celebrates volunteers' help in assisting non-profits to expand their reach.


DETROIT--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- More than 500 local General Electric (NYS: GE) employees are volunteering their time to help take on some of today's toughest challenges − healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured, education and aiding in the makeover of the Motor City − during the 3rd Annual GE Community Day across the Detroit area.

This year's Community Day also marks the one year anniversary of GE's Developing Health program in Detroit, celebrating its continuous efforts to give back to the communities where our employees live and work. The Developing Health efforts build on a two-year, $500,000 investment GE made to the Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS) and The Wellness Plan in 2012 to develop, promote and provide comprehensive, accessible and affordable quality primary healthcare and support services to uninsured or underinsured populations throughout Detroit.

"Today's celebration marked a successful first year of the Developing Health program at The Wellness Plan," said Anthony King, CEO and Executive Director of The Wellness Plan. "Thanks to GE's monetary support and volunteer efforts, we've been able to establish a diabetes and hypertension clinic and provide transportation for patients to the clinic, hire a family practitioner and hire a social worker to engage the community through outreach activities and to provide counseling for our patients."

CHASS has also benefitted from GE's investment. Through GE's financial contribution, CHASS has been able to launch its wellness center, which provides yoga and healthy cooking classes for its staff and patients. The staff at CHASS has also been able to develop their professionalism and expertise through hands-on training events in customer service put on by GE volunteers. Since 2009, GE has added more than 950 jobs at its Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center (AMSTC) in Van Buren Township and is committed to growing its Detroit-area workforce to 1,400 over the next few years.
