Amazon.com Signs Deal With Viacom for Kids' Shows, More

Updated

"Finders keepers, loser weepers" is a rule that should be familiar to every member of the preschool set. Netflix might not be weeping today, but Amazon.com is playing the keeper as it has swooped in to nab distribution rights to a series of shows that Netflix recently passed on.

Today, Amazon announced that it has secured rights from Viacom to stream "thousands of episodes from Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV and COMEDY CENTRAL" to its customers. Bubble Guppies; Go, Diego, Go!; Blue's Clues; and The Backyardigans, along with other "top-rated shows from MTV and Comedy Central like Awkward, Tosh.0 and Workaholics," will become streamable exclusively through Amazon Prime.

The company adds that in future, Amazon Prime members will also be able to watch streaming video of Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, Fairly Odd Parents, Fresh Beat Band, and other Nickelodeon shows. Later this summer, distribution rights for many of these shows will also benefit customers of Amazon's LOVEFiLM subsidiary in the U.K. and Germany.

As of now, Amazon says that its Prime Instant Video service offers more than 41,000 movies and TV episodes for its members, streamable on Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets, and also on iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, Roku, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Wii U devices, and others.
