Delaware Launches Public Meeting Calendar for Local Government

DOVER, Del.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Local governments in Delaware can now use the state's Public Meeting Calendar to advertise their formal meetings and public hearings. State agencies are required to post their public meetings on the system; local governments can now use the system as well. The Lewes Board of Public Works recently became the first local government agency to use the calendar system, which is found at calendar.delaware.gov.

The Delaware eGovernment team has launched an updated version of the Calendar that adds the ability for local governments to post their meetings. The change comes in response to legislation, passed in 2012, that called for expanded online opportunities for public notice of governmental activities.

The current Public Meeting Calendar launched in the spring of 2012 as a replacement for a system that had been in place for eight years. It was developed by the Delaware Government Information Center (GIC), in partnership with Delaware Interactive as part of Delaware's eGovernment initiative. The calendar supports the state's mandate for a more efficient and open government.

"It is important for Delawareans to know when and where government public meetings are held," said Greg Hughes, Director of the Government Information Center. "State and local government works with and for the citizens. A transparent and effective government relies on input from the citizens. This system helps enable that partnership."

The system provides calendar views by month or day and search functions to retrieve specific meetings both past and future. Each meeting entry includes detailed information about the location, including a map and QR code to download meeting information directly to a personal calendar, as well as agendas and meeting minutes.
