PECO Receives American Gas Association Safety Achievement Award

Organization recognized as utility industry leader in employee safety

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The American Gas Association (AGA) has recognized PECO with its Safety Achievement Award for experiencing the lowest DART (Days Away, Restricted and Transferred) incidence rate among large electric and natural gas utilities in 2012. The company was acknowledged at the AGA Operations Conference held this month in Orlando, FL.

AGA President & CEO Dave McCurdy applauded PECO among a group of gas distribution utilities with outstanding workforce safety records.

"America's natural gas delivery system is the safest, most reliable energy delivery system in the nation. This is due to the hard work and dedication of the employees of our local natural gas utilities," said McCurdy.

The Safety Achievement Award is given to member companies that experienced the lowest DART incident rate — a mathematical calculation that describes the number of recordable injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time employees that resulted in days away from work or restricted work activity.

PECO's Gas division recorded two employee injury incidents requiring OSHA reporting in 2012 and one incident resulting in days away from work or restricted work activity. PECO employs about 300 employees in its gas delivery and gas plant operations, who are responsible for building and maintaining the utility's distribution network and securing natural gas for the company's 497,000 customers across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and a small portion of Lancaster counties.

"This award recognizes PECO's commitment to safety and is a testament to the extensive initiatives that are implemented to mitigate the hazards that utility workers face on a daily basis," said Ron Bradley, vice president of PECO Gas Operations. "The adherence to procedures and employee training has attributed to PECO's excellent safety record and we look to continue this trend moving forward."

Ryan Lewis, manager of PECO Gas Regulatory Compliance, accepted the award on the company's behalf. In addition to receiving the Safety Achievement Award, Lewis served as a guest speaker where he shared aspects of PECO's safety program with conference participants. PECO also will provide a presentation at an upcoming AGA safety culture workshop in conjunction with the Operations Best Practices Program in June.
