Metro Boston Takes the Lead with Adults 21-49

New readership figures herald a new media landscape in Boston

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Metro becomes the most read daily newspaper among adults aged 21-49 in Greater Boston, the latest Scarborough survey reveals. Over the past year, Metro gained more than 50,000 daily readers - an increase of 25% year over year. In the meantime, the Herald lost nearly 100,000 daily readers - a decrease of 20% year over year consistent with Herald's latest print circulation decline.

For the first time ever, Metro reaches more than half a million readers in Boston every week.

"Metro's audience is stronger than ever," Yggers Mortensen, Metro US Publisher and CEO said. "We continue to grow, innovate and find new ways to engage Bostonians and deliver impact to advertisers both in print and online."

Metro's readership success can be attributed to continued focus on distribution and editorial. In the past few months, Metro re-launched its website metro.us, refreshed the design of its print editions, and introduced new interactive features such as Blippar, the hot new augmented reality app.

Scarborough confirms Metro's attractive demographics. With a median age of 34 years, Metro has the youngest reader profile in town - 21 years younger that the Boston Herald.

Some highlights from the latest Scarborough release (R1 2013):

  • Every day, Metro Boston reaches 267,644 people

  • Every week, Metro Boston reaches 503,599 print readers

  • Metro is #1 among Adults 18-34, 21-49 in Boston DMA

  • 71% of Metro readers are aged under 50 years - compared to only 36% of Boston Herald readers
