SurePayroll Helps Small-business Owners Navigate the First Hire Process

CEO Michael Alter to Host TweetChat to Educate Small Businesses on When to Hire

GLENVIEW, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- We hear repeatedly that small business fuels the economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 8.7 million new jobs were created in the small-business sector between 2011 and 2012. While small-business owners are faced with significant decisions on a daily basis that impact the growth of a successful business, one of the more challenging considerations is when to hire the first employee. The decision to hire often puts small-business owners in a position of uncertainty, as transitioning to the role of employer may be as new to them as their business itself and carries a lot of responsibility.

To help small-business owners get a better understanding of when and how to make their first hire, Michael Alter, CEO of SurePayroll, will host a First Hire TweetChat on June 5, 2013 at 12 noon ET. As an expert advisor to small businesses, through his own client base and as advisory and board member in the entrepreneur community, Alter is repeatedly asked for advice about when it's the right time to hire, how to go about making that first hire, and what small-business owners need to know about getting a first hire started. Based on SurePayroll research of more than 5,600 of its small-business customers, a first hire is most often made immediately when starting a business.

Details about the TweetChat:

  • Host: @SurePayroll CEO Michael Alter

  • Date: June 5, 2013

  • Time: 12 noon ET/11 a.m. CT

  • How: Submit questions in advance on The Payroll Blog or pose questions in real-time during the live TweetChat using the hashtag #FirstHire. The first 50 to submit a question in advance will receive a $5 Starbucks gift card. All participants in the TweetChat will be entered to win a $200 Amazon gift card.

Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to ask questions of Alter in real-time to get to the heart of what they need to know when hiring their first employee. Alter will provide insights that include recognizing the signs a new business is ready to make a hire, best practices for determining the right hire, and the legal and financial obligations to be aware of as an employer.

As co-founder of SurePayroll, and through his work at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Chicago digital start-up incubator 1871, Alter has focused much of his career on educating and advising entrepreneurs and small businesses on how to work smarter and leverage the best of technology and people to simplify business operations.

"Determining when to hire the first employee and knowing how to go about it properly can be incredibly intimidating, while undergoing the process represents a mountain of work when business owners are already pressed for time," said Alter. "I hear the same questions over and over again: When do I hire? How much do I pay? How do I go about getting my new employee on payroll? What about taxes? There's a significant appetite for assessing the need to make a hire and how to navigate the process."
