Petition to Ottawa Seeks Recognition for First Responders

Duracell asks Canadians to help recognize the heroes we rely on by rallying for National First Responder Day

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Every day and night across Canada, thousands of emergency first responders answer our calls for help. To show our appreciation for the courageous heroes protecting our communities around the clock, Duracell and the Canadian Fire Services have launched a national petition to establish a National First Responder Day in Canada.

The petition calls on members of Parliament"to join Duracell and the Canadian Fire Services to show appreciation and gratitude for the brave and courageous heroes who selflessly serve our communities everyday - firefighters, police officers and EMS workers - by introducing a National First Responder Day in Canada. This would provide Canadians an opportunity to say 'thank you' for the important job they do." Visit Facebook.com/Duracell for more petition details.

"The men and women who serve communities across the country merit recognition for the important work they do," said Stephen Gamble, president of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC). "It's great to see a company like Duracell, a long time fire safety partner, taking up a campaign to recognize and thank Canadian first responders."

"As a firefighter, our job is helping people in emergency situations," said Troy Mutch, president of the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA). "While we don't become first responders for the praise, we know our job can be dangerous at times, so we're grateful to be recognized in this way."

A co-worker experiences chest pains you call an ambulance. Your smoke alarm awakens you from your sleep and you call the fire department. Your child doesn't come home from school and you call the police. These are just some of the many ways first responders protect our families and communities every day.

"Some are first responders by profession, while others are volunteers, but they all put their lives on the line for us." said Victoria Maybee, Communications Manager for Duracell Canada. "Establishing a National First Responder Day will give Canadians a chance to say thank you to these unsung heroes."

Batteries might seem like a small item, but they power many important devices in our homes that can help prepare us for an emergency, just as they are a key power source in a variety of firefighting and lifesaving equipment. Communication devices equipment like flashlights, thermal imaging cameras, chemical detectors and defibrillators are just some examples of the battery-powered tools that first responders use to protect the communities they serve.
