SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Wind River®, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, today announced extended multicore capabilities for its industry-leading VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS). VxWorks has expanded multicore operating system support for the latest Intel®, Freescale, and ARM processors, and supports key high performance interfaces required by next generation intelligent systems.

VxWorks, a fully 32-bit and 64-bit capable RTOS, provides comprehensive multicore processor support, including, asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP), symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), and mixed AMP and SMP mode configurations. The VxWorks AMP- and SMP-enabled platforms allow for scalable, higher-performance multicore-powered products with reduced risk and development investment. In addition, VxWorks can be paired with Wind River Hypervisor for an optimized scalable virtualization solution to enable single core and/or multicore configurations supporting multiple operating systems and AMP/SMP configurations on the same platform.

Wind River has a proven history of best-in-class support for the latest market-leading multicore processors across its product portfolio, which has broadened to include VxWorks support for Intel® Atom, Freescale QorIQ T4240, and ARM Cortex-A15 MPCore. VxWorks enables unparalleled choice in system architecture, from small-scale single core, lower power devices up to large multicore, multi-OS, and multi-application devices. It also provides support for hardware offload acceleration on these devices for packet processing, signal and vector processing, and cryptography.

For the extensive connectivity, performance, and power management capabilities needed in next-generation devices, VxWorks now includes the latest input/output technologies and high speed interfaces to support multicore technologies, including USB 3.0, Serial ATA Revision 3.0, PCI Express 3.0, and Serial RapidIO.

"Wind River continues to stay ahead of the technology curve by progressively expanding VxWorks' proficiency to obtain maximum performance from the evolving multicore landscape, enabling customers to realize the benefits of multicore technology with an RTOS that's fully multicore enabled," said Dinyar Dastoor, vice president of product management at Wind River. "VxWorks delivers the greatest scalability and configurability to extract the highest performance with minimal footprint for multicore platforms."

Wind River has a unique advantage within the industry with its market-leading operating system portfolio1, which comprises run-time technologies including VxWorks, Wind River Linux, and Android technologies, as well as a large global professional services team with extensive experience in multicore architecture and migration strategies.
