"Star Trek: Into Darkness" Scores Big
The second installment of the latest Star Trek movie series, Star Trek: Into Darkness, from Paramount and Marvel Studios, divisions of Viacom , unseated Iron Man 3 in its opening weekend, raking in an estimated $70.56 million over the May 17-19 weekend, according to figures from Hollywood.com.
Including Thursday, May 16 results, Star Trek: Into Darkness has grossed a total of $84.1 million from 3,868 theaters. The average of $18,241 per theater for Star Trek: Into Darkness was more than double Disney's Iron Man 3, the second-highest-grossing film over the weekend with an additional $35.19 million. In total, Iron Man 3 has earned approximately $337 million since its opening. Iron Man 3 took in $174 million domestically in its opening weekend. The previous Star Trek movie took in $75.2 million on its opening weekend in 2009.
Warner Bros. Entertainment, a division of Time Warner , held on to the third spot over the weekend with The Great Gatsby, generating an additional $23.42 million, bringing its total to an estimated $90.16 million.
