Kellogg School of Management Students Honor Starbucks Howard Schultz with Distinguished Leadership Award
EVANSTON, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University today will honor Howard Schultz, Starbucks Coffee Company (NAS: SBUX) chairman, president and chief executive officer, with the 2013 Kellogg Award for Distinguished Leadership.
Mr. Schultz was selected for the award by the Kellogg School student body in recognition of his entrepreneurial spirit and transformation of Starbucks into a business with a social conscience. Kellogg School MBA student Matt Kinn nominated Mr. Schultz for the award.
"Mr. Schultz has taken a revolutionary approach to creating a uniquely authentic company," said Mr. Kinn. "His sense of responsibility for his partners (employees) and the global communities which Starbucks serves is unprecedented. We are proud to honor Mr. Schultz with this award and recognize him as an example of the success one can achieve by staying true to one's guiding principles."
Mr. Schultz first joined Starbucks in 1982, as director of operations and marketing when Starbucks had only four stores. He left Starbucks for a short period of time and returned in 1987 as chief executive officer to purchase Starbucks with the help of local investors. Today, Starbucks is the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world, with nearly 19,000 stores and 200,000 partners in 62 countries. Earlier this year, Starbucks was ranked by Fortune Magazine as the fifth most admired company in the world.

Established in 2002, the Kellogg Award for Distinguished Leadership recognizes business and civic leaders who exemplify courage, vision and transformational execution. The award is an acknowledgment of leadership that is consistent with the ideals of the Kellogg School of Management and promotes Kellogg's commitment to developing leaders of the highest caliber and character.
Other recent honorees include Indra Nooyi, chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo; Wendy Kopp, founder and president of Teach for America; and Fred Smith, chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx.
Mr. Schultz will accept the award and address the Kellogg community on Monday, May 20 at 5:15 p.m. in the Owen L. Coon Forum (OLC) at the Jacobs Center.
