The rising stock market has helped millions of investors post impressive gains recently. But even as the Dow Jones Industrials have been setting successive all-time record highs, short-sellers who bet against the market have seen their fortunes dwindle.

Despite the confidence that short-sellers had that these four companies were doomed to failure, their share prices have defied their expectations and exploded higher, causing massive losses for shorts.
