Unum recognized for focus on clear benefits communication

Center for Plain Language grants Unum a ClearMark Award for GetBenefitSmart.com

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- When it comes to customer communication, Unum's focus on simplicity recently earned the company a second ClearMark Award from the Center for Plain Language.

"This recognition is an affirmation that we're moving in the right direction," said Bilda Acuna, assistant vice president of Hispanic Markets. "We understand that insurance terms don't help people process information about financial protection. GetBenefitSmart.com is a step in connecting with consumers directly."

The site takes an interactive approach, offering simple answers to common questions about benefits coverage. It addresses a range of perspectives, from young adults to those considering retirement, and is available in Spanish at BeneficiosParaMi.com.

Unum's site offers advice on employee benefits even beyond those the company provides, including accident, disability, life, health, dental and retirement.

"The site's flexibility makes it useful to people in various stages of life," Acuna said. "Real-world examples are customized for the audience. For example, in explaining the value of accident insurance, the site presents younger people with a story about the hazards of texting and walking, and explains the cost of this coverage in the context of a latte."

Last year, Unum received a ClearMark Award for its guide on how to file a disability claim and what people can expect after filing.

"When you look at the benefits purchasing process and how it has shifted and evolved, benefits providers need to help consumers understand their options," Acuna said.
