-- Interactive Report Showcases Aetna Empowering People to Live Healthier Lives by Making an Integrated Health Care System a Reality --

HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Aetna (NYSE: AET) today released "Empowering People to Live Healthier Lives," a next-generation digital annual report that uses interactive media to tell The Aetna Story.

Through brief video vignettes, the report celebrates the power of the human touch, showing how an Aetna nurse's phone call spurred a member to take life-saving action. The report also shows how Aetna uses the power of its health information technology to deliver both personal health solutions to individuals and population health solutions to large care providers, such as hospital systems.

The Aetna Story features a letter to shareholders from Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna chairman, CEO and president, along with a video message. The video message includes excerpts from Bertolini's remarks at the Detroit Economic Club, discussing the global need to control rising health care costs which he describes as "a burdensome, difficult, vexing problem in every part of the world." Bertolini goes on to note, "We need to move from a medical system to an integrated health care system."

In his letter, Bertolini discusses new care models that are part of an integrated health care system, such as Accountable Care Organizations. He also discusses consumerism as a driving force in making health care simpler and more convenient for more people.

The report is presented in an electronic format for the fifth consecutive year to engage readers and preserve natural resources. The report features:

  • Financial highlights;

  • A video showcasing how Aetna's personalized technology helps its members be more informed about their own health and health care;

  • A video demonstrating how Aetna's products and services deliver important timely information to members and even save lives; and

  • A discussion of how Aetna's provider relationships are transforming the way care is delivered, improving quality and efficiency across America.
