Cohen & Steers Global Realty Majors ETF Passes $100 Million in Assets

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Cohen & Steers Global Realty Majors Exchange Trade Fund (ETF), an ALPS Advisors Solution (Symbol: GRI) passed $100 million in assets. The ETF, which was launched in May 2008, tracks the Cohen & Steers Global Realty Majors Index - an index of the top 75 publicly traded real estate companies in the world.

The Cohen & Steers Global Realty Majors Index leverages the in-depth proprietary research of Cohen & Steers, a leader in listed real estate investing for over 25 years. The philosophy and methodology behind the index is based on Cohen & Steers belief that the leading real estate companies possess material competitive advantages over smaller market participants.

While there are exceptions, we believe these companies are generally best positioned to create value for shareholders over the long run due to their dominant market positions, giving them greater leverage when negotiating leases with tenants. Leaders also tend to own better properties in desirable locations with stable tenants, which may result in more-consistent cash flows. Given their size, asset quality and generally strong balance sheets, the leaders often enjoy a lower cost of capital, giving them greater flexibility to take advantage of acquisition opportunities.

The smart index methodology is as follows:

  • Companies must meet minimum size and liquidity requirements, and are selected based on qualitative factors such as market position, management team, financial health and the quality of their property portfolio.

  • The index attempts to maintain geographic representation proportional to the broader global real estate securities market, while limiting individual allocations to 4% of the total net asset value.

  • The index consists of a free-float adjusted, modified market capitalization weighted portfolio of 75 securities, calculated on a real-time basis by Standard & Poor's and established with a base value of 100 at December 15, 2006.
