Save on Spring Cleaning With a New Vacuum -- Savings Experiment

Updated

Spring is the perfect time to get some deep cleaning done, but there are a few things you should keep in mind if you're in the market for a new vacuum. Here's how to save on this major cleaning tool.

First, skip the multifunctional models. Combo vacuums aren't the best solution, as they generally don't do any function well. In other words, leave the mopping to mops and focus on purchasing a quality vacuum cleaner.

When it comes to vacuums, there are two types: uprights and canisters. According to ConsumerSearch.com, uprights are the less expensive of the two, going for about $40 for a basic model. As far as function goes, they're better at deep cleaning carpets, but heavier and harder to lug around.

On the other hand, canisters are a little more expensive, costing about $60 for a standard model. With their far-reaching wands, however, they're great for cleaning curtains, stairs and hard to reach places.

While it's nice to have a canister vacuum as a second option, it'll cost you extra money and storage space. So, stick with the upright. If you want to save even more money, ask your salesperson if you can buy the floor model at a discount. Retailers may be open to this, and are likely to give you something like 10 percent off -- and these days, every penny counts.
