Humana Named in the Top Ten for Military Times' 2013 "Best Employers for Vets"

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Humana Inc. (NYS: HUM) announces its ranking of eighth in the Military Times EDGE magazine's "Best Employers for Vets 2013." Military Times is a weekly publication for active duty and retired personnel of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps subscribers.

Military Times invited major corporations and government contractors across the country to submit a detailed questionnaire about hiring policies/recruiting, company policies relating to veterans, Guard/Reservists and their families, and organizational culture.


The final rankings were based on the following criteria:

  • Veterans hiring preferences, percentage of veteran executives

  • Training company officials receive regarding military culture

  • Processes used to acclimate new veteran employees to the company

  • Military spouse policies

  • Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) awards

Earlier this year, Humana announced it surpassed President Obama's challenge to hire 1,000 Guard/Reserve members, veterans, military retirees and/or spouses within 16 months. Leveraging on its success, Humana plans to hire an additional 1,000 within the next two years through its National Veterans Initiative hiring program.

In addition to the hiring initiative, Humana's long history of excellence in military and veterans' services includes administrating health-benefits for three million active duty, retired military personnel and their families under the Department of Defense's TRICARE program in addition to developing health care solutions for the Department of Veteran Affairs through its wholly owned subsidiary, Humana Government Business.
