3D Systems Creates "Star Trek" App

Updated

3D Systems is hoping Star Trek fans would like to "beam up" personalized figurines of their favorite sci-fi action heros.

The maker of three-dimensional printing systems announced today that it is teaming up with CBS's Consumer Products division to sell personalized 5.5-inch figurines that are "3D printed in full-color on 3D Systems' Projet(R) 660Pro, with a ceramic-like feel." The figurines, dressed in official Star Trek garb from the television series of the same name, can be designed with an app on 3D's Cubify website using uploaded photographs of the customer's face. They retail for $69.99 each.

Customers can personalize their figurines with options such as Star Trek rank from ensign through captain, uniform color, and poses including the "live long and prosper" Vulcan gesture complete with Vulcan ears.

Making the announcement today, Senior Director of Cubify for 3D Systems Sarah W. Stocker said: "We're delighted to offer Star Trek fans the chance to join the crew of the Enterprise in a way that was never before possible -- by replicating themselves in 3D as a crew member."
