EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DIRECTV announced today that Michael Hartman, senior vice president and general counsel of DIRECTV Latin America, has been appointed to an additional role as corporate secretary and deputy general counsel of DIRECTV.

Hartman, who will continue to oversee all legal, government relations and regulatory affairs for DIRECTV's rapidly growing Latin America business, will assume key corporate governance responsibilities for DIRECTV that include working closely with its board of directors to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations and provide counsel to the board on key legal responsibilities.

Hartman will report to Larry Hunter, executive vice president and general counsel of DIRECTV. In his capacity as general counsel of DIRECTV Latin America, he will continue to report to Bruce Churchill, president of DIRECTV Latin America.

"Michael is well prepared to take on these added responsibilities with DIRECTV and we look forward to having the benefit of his sharp legal mind, corporate governance expertise and wisdom."

Hartman joined DIRECTV in 2004 as senior vice president and general counsel of DIRECTV Latin America and was responsible for negotiating and overseeing the approvals and closings of transactions that combined DIRECTV Latin America and SKY Latin America. More recently, Michael guided government relations efforts to face significant changes to the regulatory regimes in Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Colombia; spearheaded the acquisition of wireless spectrum in Argentina, Brazil and Peru; and recently formed the Alliance Against Pay TV Piracy (Alianza Contra la Piratería en Televisión Paga), a pan-regional alliance of pay TV companies whose mission is to combat video piracy in the region.

Prior to joining DIRECTV Latin America, he was general counsel at StarMedia Network, Inc., an Internet portal and wireless content solutions company targeting users in Latin America.
