New Jersey Lt. Gov. Toasts New Water Treatment Plant in Millburn
Lt. Gov. Guadagno drinks first glass of water from New Jersey American Water's Canoe Brook Water Treatment Plant
VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- At the groundbreaking for New Jersey American Water's new water treatment plant in Millburn, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno told the audience she wanted the plant's first glass of water. Nearly two years later, Lt. Gov. Guadagno drank that glass of water as the company ceremoniously opened the $78 million facility on JFK Boulevard.
Guadagno along with New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) President Robert Hanna, BPU Commissioner Mary Anna Holden, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Assistant Commissioner Michele Siekerka, Executive Director of the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust David Zimmer, Maplewood Mayor Victor DeLuca, and many others joined company employees, including New Jersey American Water President David K. Baker, in toasting the more than 200 men and women who worked to make the new plant a state-of-the-art reality.
The new plant, which draws and treats water from the Canoe Brook Reservoirs, replaced a 1920s era treatment facility and was constructed to meet the new standards for disinfection byproducts under the Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Act. It has advanced capabilities to improve the taste and smell of water, and improved security and safety measures, including protection from occasional flooding. The plant serves customers in the communities of Millburn, West Orange, Irvington, Maplewood, Springfield, and Summit.
"For the Millburn area to continue being a great place to live and work, requires our investments in a supportive, reliable, high-quality water system," said David Baker. "Most of our physical assets, whether below ground, where you cannot see it, or above ground in a plant or a pump station where you can, have a life span that requires maintenance, renewal and eventual replacement. Our challenge is to make sound choices that will ensure sustainability and leverage new technologies. This new Canoe Brook plant is a good example of that."
