SM Energy (NYS: SM) reported earnings on April 30. Here are the numbers you need to know.

SM Energy recorded revenue of $484.2 million. The 15 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ predicted sales of $462.6 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 29% higher than the prior-year quarter's $374.3 million.

EPS details
EPS came in at $0.82. The 25 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.58 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.82 for Q1 were 71% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.48 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.25 for Q1 were 36% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.39 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 74.1%, 40 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 13.6%, 210 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 3.5%, 350 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $493.5 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.65.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $2.04 billion. The average EPS estimate is $2.88.
