Baker Receives 2012 Environmental Business Journal Project Merit Award

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE MKT:BKR), announced that it was honored with a 2012 Environmental Business Journal Project Merit Award at the Environmental Industry Summit XI in Coronado, Calif., in March 2013, for the Canonsburg Dam Rehabilitation project. Canonsburg Dam, owned and maintained by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is a 70-year-old concrete gravity dam located in southwestern Pennsylvania which had been deemed at risk of failure. Baker developed an innovative system of high-capacity rock anchors and passive dowels to stabilize and anchor the Dam's concrete monoliths to bedrock to provide resistance to overturning and sliding while also maintaining the normal water surface elevation of Canonsburg Lake.

PFBC's Jerry Woomer, P.E., noted, "The rehabilitation of Canonsburg Dam was completed one month ahead of schedule and under the original $2.1 million construction cost which is a direct reflection of Baker's contingency plans and its proactive approach with the construction contractor. This project ensures that Canonsburg Dam will be protected and allow for Canonsburg Lake to provide fishing and boating opportunities to the region for generations to come."

Baker's Chad Davis, P.E., Dam Safety and Rehabilitation Services lead, added, "The project is a great example of how design and construction challenges provide opportunities to innovate; and it showcases Baker's expertise in the rapidly growing Dam Safety and Rehabilitation market."
