Marvel Superheroes Will Set Sail on Disney Magic

Updated

Disney hosted a media event late last week detailing its latest theme park and resort moves. A major project will be updating the Disney Magic, the family entertainment giant's original cruise ship.

The new boat will have enhanced entertainment and dining areas. Even the outdoor water play areas will get a new thrill ride in AquaDunk. However, for comic-book fans wondering if there was anything left for Disney to milk out of its Marvel acquisitions, it seems that there's new life at sea for some of its characters.

Disney Magic will feature Marvel Avengers Academy, a new play area for your cruise passengers that's decked out with Avengers costumes and high-tech interactive areas.

Ever since Royal Caribbean introduced outdoor rock walls for daring climbers, cruise lines have tried to raise the stakes in attracting young passengers who can't be wooed by mere spa treatments or midnight buffets. Carnival , Royal Caribbean, and the recently public Norwegian Cruise Lines have added zip lines, indoor bowling alleys, and even bumper cars to make sea life more appealing to young families with toddlers and young adults.

In this video, longtime Fool contributor Rick Munarriz explores what the new Avengers play area will mean for the cruise ship and for Disney.
