Avnet Recognized by IDG's InfoWorld as One of the Top 15 Leaders in Sustainable Technology

Avnet honored on the InfoWorld Green 15 for its innovative approach to data center cooling to reduce energy consumption

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), a global value-added technology distributor, today announced that it was named to the InfoWorld Green 15. This annual award developed by IDG's InfoWorld honors 15 leading organizations that have found new and innovative ways to diminish their environmental impact by reducing carbon emissions, saving electricity, reducing fuel consumption, and eliminating paper waste. These leading companies have also gained significant business benefits through sustainable technology, including higher productivity, lower costs and improved employee morale. Avnet was selected for this prestigious list based on its strategic approach to conserving energy in its data center, including the use of innovative cooling practices.

"Avnet has significantly improved the energy efficiency of our data center over the past eight years by implementing virtualization, deploying a new storage environment, installing green lighting, and making physical changes to the building," said Steve Phillips, senior vice president and CIO, Avnet, Inc. "With these measures successfully in place, we turned to our data center cooling systems to further decrease our energy usage and operating expenses. I'm incredibly proud of the innovative ways our team continues to find to lessen Avnet's environmental impact and help the company come closer to achieving its green goals."

InfoWorld recognized Avnet for its holistic data center cooling strategy to reduce power consumption in its 25-year-old North America data center. As a part of this strategy, Avnet deployed automation software and environmental sensors, implemented hot and cold aisles, and installed the first of its kind air-side economizer in the Southwest, which uses outside air from the Sonoran desert to cool the facility. These measures enabled Avnet to raise the temperature in its data center and reduce its related energy consumption by more than 35 percent.

"Once again, organizations represented in this year's crop of Green 15 winners have raised the green bar, finding innovative ways to leverage sustainable IT practices to reduce costly waste and boost efficiency while improving their overall environmental standing," said Ted Samson, senior analyst, InfoWorld.

Companies around the world have embraced green technology to drive projects and develop products aimed at boosting energy efficiency, trimming waste, and reducing or eliminating the use or the production of harmful substances. The InfoWorld Green 15 awards annually recognize the 15 most innovative IT initiatives that fall under this umbrella of sustainability.
