Energen Increases Sales but Misses Estimates on Earnings
Energen (NYS: EGN) reported earnings on April 29. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Energen missed estimates on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue grew significantly. Non-GAAP earnings per share dropped. GAAP earnings per share contracted.
Margins dropped across the board.
Energen reported revenue of $492.7 million. The six analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ hoped for a top line of $508.0 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 18% higher than the prior-year quarter's $418.4 million.

EPS came in at $1.14. The 13 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $1.24 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.14 for Q1 were 14% lower than the prior-year quarter's $1.33 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.78 for Q1 were 1.3% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.79 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 51.0%, 880 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 21.4%, 860 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 11.5%, 220 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $404.3 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.64.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $1.80 billion. The average EPS estimate is $3.36.
