Google Picks Provo, Utah, as Third City for Google Fiber

Updated

Following the announcement earlier this month that Google is bringing its gigabit Fiber service to Austin, Texas, in 2014, the search giant has now announced that it intends to bring Google Fiber to Provo, Utah, next. It will be the third city to receive the service.

The company noted that many tech start-ups are based in Provo, and the area ranks second in the nation in patent growth.

Google has agreed to acquire iProvo, an existing fiber-optic network owned by the city. It will upgrade the network to gigabit speeds and continue network construction to expand service availability. The agreement has not yet been finalized, and is up for a City Council vote next week.

As soon as the deal is finalized, Google will begin network upgrades.
