Aetna Captures Top National Plain Language Award

HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Aetna (NYSE: AET) has won top honors in the Center for Plain Language's annual ClearMark competition for the new Writers' Center for Excellence. The Writers' Center for Excellence is a website that enables Aetna employees to write clearer messages to members. These written communications help guide Aetna members through a complex health care system.

"Our goal is to look at what we do through the eyes of our members and drive toward clear, helpful communications," said Kristi Matus, executive vice president of Government Businesses and head of Aetna's consumer engagement initiatives. "We want them to better understand their health care so they and their families can live healthier lives."

Launched in 2012, the Writers' Center for Excellence is a platform that supports clear written communications across the company.

"We envision a community of employees who help each other create health care materials that are easier to understand," said Melissa Slade, head of Provider and Member Communications, Production and Education.

Aetna is the winner this year in the private sector category for website and dynamic media. Judges said the Writers' Center for Excellence is simple, easy to navigate and "practices what it preaches" with a helpful, conversational tone.

Aetna has now been recognized by the Center for Plain Language the past three years. Last year, Aetna won in the same category for David, the Aetna Benefits AdvisorSM. David serves as an online guide by asking members a series of questions in a friendly and conversational manner to help them choose the health plan that best fits their needs.

The Center for Plain Language is a D.C.-based nonprofit organization that wants government and business documents to be clear and understandable. The ClearMark and WonderMark awards recognize the best and worst in plain language each year from government, nonprofit, and private companies.

The awards were presented at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on April 16.
