Confirmed: Google Fiber Expanding to Austin, Texas
After a week of rumors, search giant Google confirmed today that it is bringing its Google Fiber service to Austin, Texas, making it the second major metropolitan area, following Kansas City.
Google said the service plans for Austinites would be similar to the choices available in Kansas City, although the company is still finalizing pricing details. It said pricing in Austin would be similar to Kansas City prices.
Austin and Google are targeting mid-2014 to roll out the gigabit Internet service that the search giant boasts is 100 times faster than average broadband connections. Google intends to connect public institutions in Austin such as schools, hospitals, and community centers, among others, at no charge.
Austin is known to have a tech-savvy population and is known as a breeding ground for start-ups.
