IXYS Introduces New Phase Control Thyristor for Rotating Generators in Renewable Energy Applications
BIEL, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- IXYS Corporation (NAS: IXYS) an international power and IC semiconductor company, today announced that its wholly owned UK subsidiary, IXYS UK Westcode Ltd., launched a new phase control thyristor in a specially designed package suitable for rotating applications.
The thyristor rated at 3000 volt is based on IXYS UK's world class all diffused silicon process with the silicon slice fused to a metal disc for optimum thermal and mechanical durability. The device has average current rating of 1436A at a heat sink temperature of 55C and is suitable for line frequency applications up to 400Hz. The fully hermetic package has been especially designed to withstand movement of the silicon die when rotated tangential to the plane of the electrodes. The new package design is suitable for applications with acceleration of up to 620 metres per second squared, when the device is mounted with the anode electrode facing the centre of rotation.
"Rotating diode technology has been established for many years, however, this new thyristor allows for the additional option of incorporating a controlled rectifier directly onto the rotating parts of a machine armature. This has great potential in the development of more efficient machine control in important renewable energy application such as hydro generators," commented Frank Wakeman, IXYS UK's Marketing & Technical Support Manager.
The device is available in two different voltage grades. Designations are: N1479NC24R (2400 Volts) and N1479NC30R (3000 Volts). In addition to these two products, devices with other voltages from 1200V to 3600V can be quickly produced from IXYS UK's standard phase control product lines. Also other voltages from 600V to 6.5kV could be developed, should these be required. For these and other product options please consult factory.
Devices are suitable as controlled rectifiers for all rotating applications including hydro power and generator sets.
