ConAgra Foods Misses Where it Counts
ConAgra Foods (NYS: CAG) reported earnings on April 3. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Feb. 24 (Q3), ConAgra Foods met expectations on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue increased. Non-GAAP earnings per share grew. GAAP earnings per share contracted significantly.
Margins dropped across the board.
ConAgra Foods chalked up revenue of $3.85 billion. The 11 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ wanted to see revenue of $3.90 billion on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 14% higher than the prior-year quarter's $3.37 billion.

EPS came in at $0.55. The 13 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.56 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.55 for Q3 were 7.8% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.51 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.29 for Q3 were 55% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.65 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 22.7%, 90 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 6.8%, 430 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 3.1%, 500 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $4.67 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.58.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $15.62 billion. The average EPS estimate is $2.15.
