UnitedHealthcare Gives $10,000 to Feeding America Southwest Virginia in Fight Against Hunger

ROANOKE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealthcare has donated $10,000 to Feeding America Southwest Virginia. The donation will fund the organization's Project 360 Corporate Partnership program in the fight against hunger.

Feeding America Southwest Virginia's Project 360 Corporate Partnership program provides solutions to community human service needs, including fighting hunger and providing emergency assistance for disaster victims. In addition to the company's financial support, UnitedHealthcare employees pledge to volunteer, advocate for the thousands of local men, women and children that are struggling with hunger, and collect food for Feeding America Southwest Virginia as part of the Project 360 program. UnitedHealthcare was also part of last year's initial Project 360 class.

"We are honored to continue to work with UnitedHealthcare as a Project 360 Partner to provide people throughout Southwest Virginia the most basic human need - food," said Pamela Irvine, president and CEO of Feeding America Southwest Virginia.

"UnitedHealthcare is grateful for the opportunity to partner with Feeding America Southwest Virginia to ensure more Southwest Virginians have access to nutritious food," said Mike Weneta, director at UnitedHealthcare's Roanoke site, which employs approximately 500 people.

According to Feeding America Southwest Virginia, one in six people in Southwest Virginia struggle to put food on the table. Each month Feeding America Southwest Virginia and its 405 partner feeding programs provide groceries to nearly 250,000 households annually to people in 26 counties and 10 cities in Southwest Virginia. Every $1 donation will provide $9 worth of food for the hungry.

The donation is part of UnitedHealthcare's continued support of Feeding America Southwest Virginia. During 2011 and 2012, volunteers from UnitedHealthcare and the Salem Red Sox hosted food drives at LewisGale Field, part of a week-long effort to benefit Feeding America Southwest Virginia. More than 150 UnitedHealthcare employees participated, donated or collected more than 14,000 pounds of nonperishable food items during the food drive. Since then, UnitedHealthcare employees have continued to volunteer on behalf of Feeding America Southwest Virginia by working at the local food bank and helping sort, package and distribute food throughout the Roanoke Valley.

In addition, UnitedHealthcare became a Guardians' Circle sponsor of Feeding America Southwest Virginia's Young Artists Against Hunger Gala, which will be held on April 30, 2013, at the Jefferson Center.

The Young Artist Against Hunger Gala is an opportunity to create a collaborative platform to showcase the talent of Southwest Virginia's young artists while generating awareness and support to reach people in need of food assistance. The artists will include painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, and culinary and graphic designers.
