J&J Recalls Diabetes Blood Glucose Meters
Johnson & Johnson's LifeScan unit is recalling all of its OneTouch Verio IQ blood glucose meters in the U.S.
At extremely high blood glucose of 1024 mg/dL or higher, the machine just shuts off, failing to give a warning, according to the company.
It's highly unusual for a diabetic to have blood glucose above 1024 mg/dL. Johnson & Johnson says it doesn't know of any adverse events or patient injuries related to this issue. But if a patient did have a blood glucose level that high, it's life-threatening if not treated.
There are about 90,000 users of the OneTouch Verio IQ blood glucose meter in the U.S. The health care giant has agreed to replace all of the meters free of charge.
Outside the U.S., there are three brands of Verio blood glucose meters being recalled: OneTouch Verio IQ, OneTouch Verio Pro, and OneTouch Verio Pro+. Those meters don't shut off; they just display the wrong value or don't record it properly when reading extremely high glucose levels.
