The hottest time of the year for basketball has officially begun. You know what we're talking about--chances are you're already locked into at least one pool with your co-workers. With that, it's time for the third annual March Madness Facebook Game Face-off, the ultimate showdown to decide which of the top social games on Facebook is truly the greatest.

Last year, Diamond Dash by Wooga beat PopCap's Bejeweled Blitz by a few thousand votes. While the former is in the running once again, the latter is not. Will Diamond Dash take the throne once again, or will one of its 15 competitors come out on top? That's up for you to decide.

Here's how the March Madness Facebook Game Faceoff 2013 works:

  • We've picked the top 16 Facebook games, according to recent AppData info (as of March 13), and have matched them up in the first round (see chart above) in a similar style to the real deal.

  • Head to the polls below and vote on who will win each match-up. The game with the most votes will move onto the next round. We'll tally the votes next week, March 25, and set up the second round of match-ups.

It's win or go-home time for your favorite Facebook games.

VOTE in the polls below and let the madness begin!

The mighty Candy Crush Saga goes up against an unlikely foe in Criminal Case by Pretty Simple, the 16th seed. King.com's match-3 powerhouse helped stir up the charts in 2012 and still rocks the top five. But never underestimate the underdog.

FarmVille 2 by Zynga reigns as the second seed, up against none other than its own predecessor, the original FarmVille. The choice may seem simple enough, but the new hotness is far removed from the OG. Nostalgia could very well win out against the sheen of something new, and vise versa.

In third place is Zynga's own Texas HoldEm Poker, pitted against another bar favorite gone social: 8 Ball Pool by MiniClip. Sure, the numbers say quite a bit, but which classic game drives more passion, more dedication? Both have their own international tournaments, after all. (The real deal, we mean ... of course.)

This year's fourth seed is last year's victor: Diamond Dash. The popular match-3 hit by Wooga will go toe-to-toe with Zynga Slingo, a version of one of the most iconic casual web games of all time. These two games are powerhouses in their own respective genres, but there can only be one ultimate victor.

Pet Rescue Saga is King.com's take on the Collapse!-style match-3 games. It's competition ... the most popular billiards game on Facebook: Pool Live Tour by Geewa. It's a strange match-up, but stranger things have happened in both the real March Madness and our own.

The number six spot belongs to newcomer CoasterVille this year, which pits Zynga Los Angeles's latest creation against Zynga With Friends's crown jewel, Words With Friends. Sure, one has been featured in SNL skits and major TV ads, but the other lets you build roller coasters. A tough decision, we know.

Dragon City by Social Point is in the ring with ChefVille, Zynga's essential revision of Cafe World that seems to have captivated fans all over again. Two very different simulator games on Facebook, but simulator games nonetheless. Which you dig more: raising dragons or preparing tasty dishes?

In a serendipitous turn of events, the best just may have been saved for last. Zynga's Bubble Safari is to do battle for votes with Bubble Witch Saga. The two most popular bubble shooter match-3 games now vie for your ultimate fanhood. No pressure.
