Trump Plaza's New Owner Gives Layoff Notice to 1,400 Workers
Meruelo Group president Xavier Gutierrez tells The Press of Atlantic City that the company intends to keep most Trump Plaza employees. He declined to go into detail.
The sale is expected to close in May. Once the centerpiece of Donald Trump's Atlantic City empire, Trump Plaza was considered a bargain basement deal, the lowest amount ever paid for a casino, and a comedown for the flamboyant developer. Unemployment in Atlantic City is among the worst in the country, with 20 percent unemployed, but even so, The Trump Plaza is the worst-performing casino in Atlantic City, according to NBC.
Atlantic Club Casino Hotel in Atlantic City filed similar notice in January that 1,729 employees may lose their jobs as part of a pending sale to the world's largest online poker website. The company said no job cuts are planned.
