Time Warner Cable's Research Program Releases New Report

Report Addresses the Impact of Search Engines on Local News

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Time Warner Cable (NYS: TWC) today released a new report as part of its Research Program on Digital Communications. Launched in February 2010, the Research Program engages scholars to increase understanding of the benefits and challenges facing digital technologies in the home, office, classroom and community. This report and previous ones are available free for download at the program's website.

The report released today is:

Local News Online: Aggregators, Geo-Targeting and the Market for Local News, byLisa M.George, Associate Professor of Economics, Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York. This papermarks a first attempt to measure the influence of search engines, aggregators and other digital intermediaries on the consumption of local news. Professor George's findings suggest that, while intermediaries reduce search costs, they do not appreciably increase the consumption of local news content itself. The report informs news providers and policy makers about the nature of demand for local content on the Internet and the evolving role of technology in shaping the market for news.

Fernando Laguarda, director of the program and Vice President for External Affairs and Policy Counselor at Time Warner Cable, said, "These reports from the best and brightest thought leaders in telecommunications and media policy are a wonderful resource to policymakers and industry stakeholders alike. The feedback from the policy community is overwhelmingly positive and the demand for fresh thinking remains strong. We are pleased to continue making a contribution to communications and technology policy debates."
