GM Shifts OnStar Contract to AT&T

AT&Tannounced a major win Monday, confirming that General Motors has given it the contract to service its wireless OnStar safety, security, diagnostic, and infotainment service available in Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac cars and trucks.

Previously, Verizon Wireless (jointly owned by Vodafone ) had provided the bulk of the infrastructure for this franchise, but beginning in 2014, it all switches over to AT&T.

In a press release, AT&T noted that this is a "multi-year agreement" servicing "millions of GM cars, trucks and crossovers with 4G LTE mobile Internet access." The new suite of services AT&T will be providing to OnStar subscribers will include not only streaming audio, but also Internet access, apps, and video for backseat passengers. AT&T said it will also be offering Wi-Fi hotspots and voice-activated calling in GM vehicles using OnStar.


Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
