American Water Expands Water and Sewer Line Protection Programs to Homeowners in Seven States

Programs to be offered in communities in Alabama, Delaware, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Rhode Island

VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYS: AWK) , the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced today that it is expanding the number of states in which its Water Line and Sewer Line Protection Programs will be available to homeowners in Alabama, Delaware, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Rhode Island.

Offered through American Water Resources, Inc., a subsidiary of American Water, the Water Line Protection and Sewer Line Protection Programs provide homeowners with comprehensive protection from the costs associated with leaks and breaks in water lines, as well as clogs or blockages in sewer lines running through their property. These repairs are not typically covered by homeowners' insurance or by their water or sewer service provider.

"Until they experience a service line emergency, many homeowners are unaware that they are responsible for repairs to the water and sewer lines on their property. So we are pleased to be able to educate homeowners about this issue and to offer programs that help protect them from the high cost of these repairs," said Barbara Boyarsky, Vice President and General Manager, American Water Resources.

The Water Line and Sewer Line Protection Programs provide homeowners with protection for water and sewer line emergencies that result from normal wear and tear, including the dispatching of a local, licensed independent contractor for repairs, basic site restoration and 24-7 customer service. The Water Line Protection Program covers up to $5,000 in repairs and Sewer Line Protection Program covers up to $8,000 in repairs.

"Another benefit of enrollment in these programs is that homeowners don't need to go through the hassle of finding a qualified, trustworthy contractor to make what is often an emergency repair," said Boyarsky. "American Water Resources establishes and maintains a network of local, licensed independent contractors in each of the communities we serve, so our customers can be assured of receiving expedient and effective service."

Residents in the communities where this service will be offered will receive information in the mail. Additional information about the programs is available online at www.AWRUSA.com.

As part of its expansion, the company is currently reviewing and selecting additional local, qualified plumbing contractors for its contractor networks in these communities. American Water Resources markets Water Line Protection, Sewer Line Protection, and In-Home Plumbing Emergency Programs to homeowners in 34 states, and currently services approximately one million contracts. The company has been providing protection programs for more than ten years and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. American Water Resources, which also offers protection programs to homeowners through partnerships with municipalities and other governing entities, was recently selected by the New York City Water Board as its official service line protection provider for homeowners in the City's five boroughs.

American Water Resources extends its service line protection programs to municipalities through partnerships in the LineSaver® program. LineSaver® is a solution that can be offered through municipalities to homeowners to provide protection for service line repairs that are neither the responsibility of a municipality's water department nor covered by homeowners' insurance. At no cost to the municipality, the company's experts fully manage all requirements for developing and implementing the LineSaver® program - from establishing a local independent contractor network and providing customer service, to educating the community about service line ownership and responsibility. LineSaver® enables municipalities to participate in making a valuable service available in their communities without investment or staffing increases.

Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company.
