Baidu Launches Its Product Search Engine

Updated

Baidu has finally launched an online shopping comparison website, gouwu.baidu.com.

Literally translated as "Baidu Shopping," the new website pulls in product information from most of China's online retailers. Similar to other shopping sites, browsers can search for products for men vs. women, clothing or appliances, different price ranges, and specific retailers. Currently, "Baidu Shopping" is branded as a "beta" website. Although it launched today, "Baidu Shopping" has actually been available as an app on iPhone and Android for several weeks now.

"Baidu Shopping" will now vie with Alibaba's eTao for product search market share and for businesses looking to index their products online. Luckily, Baidu won't have to go head-to-head with Google . Last December, Google closed down Google Shopping in China, citing that the product did not meet its expectations.
