Magellan Health Services Releases 2012 Community Impact Report

AVON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, Magellan Health Services (NAS: MGLN) released its second annual Community Impact Report, which outlines the company's efforts during the last 12 months to leverage its specialty health expertise in support of local communities and organizations nationwide. The publication's theme - Hands, Heart, Hope - is a reflection of Magellan's commitment to hands-on service and a heartfelt commitment to providing hope to others.

"Magellan's steadfast commitment to giving is essential to what makes the company's 'culture of caring' not just a values statement, but also a reality," says Chief Executive Officer Barry Smith. "From feeding hungry families in Alabama, to helping the homeless in Virginia, and aiding Magellan's own affected by Hurricane Sandy, I am incredibly proud of the successes we've seen this past year in further supporting those in need across the country."

Supporting the No Kid Hungry®Campaign

The issue of childhood hunger and overall wellness remained at the forefront of Magellan's social responsibility focus throughout 2012. For the second year in a row, Magellan continued its support of Share Our Strength®, a national nonprofit working to end childhood hunger in America, through its commitment to the No Kid Hungry® campaign and as a sponsor of the Florida Partnership to End Childhood Hunger. Magellan encouraged employees to spread awareness in their own communities by hosting Great American Bake Sale fundraisers and by encouraging them to sign the No Kid Hungry pledge.

Raising Awareness about Behavioral Health Issues Facing Americans

This past May, Magellan participated in National Mental Health Awareness Month by calling attention to mental health and bullying through its second annual Take Mental Health to Heart campaign. Magellan partnered with The Jed Foundation, the nation's leading organization working to promote emotional health and prevent suicide among college students and young adults, to raise awareness about the mental health effects of bullying and encourage others to take responsibility for building a bully-free community. Throughout the month, Magellan made information, resources and tools available to the public about bullying from the perspective of the victim, the bully, parents and bystanders.

Honoring Our Nation's Military Community

On November 16, Hero Health Hire and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley welcomed more than 80 health care, government and military leaders to Baltimore, MD to discuss joint efforts to hire veterans, disabled veterans and military spouses into the health care workforce. Since its founding in 2011, 43 health care organizations have joined Hero Health Hire and collectively employ approximately one million employees, and combined, offer more than 14,258 worksites in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

At the local level, and in observance of Veterans Day, employee volunteers from Human Affairs International of California (HAI), a subsidiary of Magellan, hosted a barbecue in appreciation for veterans at the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD). The event allowed for HAI employees to meet with a number of local veterans, thank them for their service to our nation, and discuss ways the two groups could work together on future initiatives.
