AVX Misses on Both Revenue and Earnings
AVX (NYS: AVX) reported earnings on Jan. 24. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q3), AVX missed estimates on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue was unchanged and GAAP earnings per share contracted significantly.
Margins dropped across the board.
AVX notched revenue of $339.9 million. The one analyst polled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated a top line of $353.6 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 0.3% lower than the prior-year quarter's $340.9 million.

EPS came in at $0.12. The three earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ forecast $0.16 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.12 for Q3 were 45% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.22 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 18.4%, 460 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 9.8%, 490 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 5.8%, 500 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $357.8 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.17.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $1.43 billion. The average EPS estimate is $0.67.
The stock has a five-star rating (out of five) at Motley Fool CAPS, with 134 members out of 143 rating the stock outperform, and nine members rating it underperform. Among 47 CAPS All-Star picks (recommendations by the highest-ranked CAPS members), 42 give AVX a green thumbs-up, and five give it a red thumbs-down.
