Lowell General PHO Selects athenahealth for Better Health Care Data Management

Cloud-based service, HDS, increases visibility into provider network performance; optimizes business and financial processes in-line with ACO efforts

WATERTOWN & LOWELL, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- athenahealth, Inc. (NAS: ATHN) , a leading provider of cloud-based electronic health record (EHR), practice management, and care coordination services to medical groups and health systems, today announced that Lowell General Physician Hospital Organization (PHO) has selected HDS, athenahealth's cloud-based health care data management service, for greater visibility into provider network performance and alignment with the Accountable Care Organization (ACO) model. HDS is the newest cloud-based service to join athenaNet®, following the acquisition of Healthcare Data Services (HDS) in September.

Having been recently named as a Medicare Shared Savings ACO, Lowell General PHO needed to transition from its internal data management process to a data engagement model that would enable the physician hospital organization to oversee patient, provider, and financial information simultaneously. Lowell General PHO selected HDS because of its unique ability to combine claims, administrative, and clinical data into a single source view and deploy that data across its provider network, enabling the organization to monitor and optimize overall performance more efficiently and effectively.

In addition, Lowell General PHO was attracted to tools within HDS that help organizations succeed under value-based payments, including shared savings and bundled payment models. These tools will help maximize care outcomes against quality goals to help Lowell General PHO become a more clinically integrated ACO.

"The entire industry is moving towards pay-for-performance initiatives, and we are expanding our previous commercial efforts to include the Medicare population," said Geraldine Vaughan, Executive Director, Lowell General PHO. "Our goal is to exceed national quality of care standards, which will require us to embrace a comprehensive monitoring and reporting service. HDS will help us have better insight into how our physicians are meeting these standards, and allow us to make adjustments in real-time as needed. Partnering with athenahealth helps to ensure and strengthen our path to becoming a fully integrated ACO."

Jonathan Bush, Chairman and CEO, athenahealth, added "The whole point of the HDS acquisition was to ensure that providers, such as Lowell General PHO, get the highest-value, population-based cost and quality data analysis and reporting capabilities available. The Medicare Shared Savings ACO plan is just one example of many different risk-based payment models. As these payment models continue to grow, so too will the number of organizations that need a service like HDS to help them meet the tall order of aligning care coordination with patient population needs, and get paid for it."
