Matthews International Misses Where it Counts

For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q1), Matthews International beat expectations on revenues and missed estimates on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue increased and GAAP earnings per share dropped significantly.

EPS came in at $0.42. The three earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.46 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.30 for Q1 were 25% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.40 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 35.4%, 50 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 7.3%, 140 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 3.7%, 150 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $240.4 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.62.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $950.8 million. The average EPS estimate is $2.51.
