Volkswagen has reported 2012 delivery statistics for its core Volkswagen Passenger Cars unit in an official news release. The division posted a record-high total for deliveries, shipping over 5.7 million cars during the year. This represented growth of 12.7% over 2011's figure.

Deliveries were robust in Asia, where they advanced 23% on a year-over-year basis. Overwhelmingly, these shipments made their way to China, which was responsible for near all of the total. Out of 2.37 million vehicles destined for Asia, that country took 2.15 million deliveries.

Also recording strong growth in terms of region was North America. Shipments increased nearly 26% there to a level of 623,300 automobiles.
