Time Warner Cable's Research Program Awards Two Stipends

Stipends Fund Research on Local Media Literacy and Online Mentoring of Students with Disabilities

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Time Warner Cable (NYS: TWC) today issued two stipends as part of its Research Program on Digital Communications. Launched in February 2010, the Research Program engages scholars to increase understanding of the benefits and challenges facing digital technologies in the home, office, classroom and community. Past reports are available free for download at the program's website.

Today's stipends are the last round of awards made for the 2012 cycle. Awards were also made during 2010 and 2011. To date, the Research Program has made 20 awards to 27 leading researchers. The next deadline for stipend applications is April 1, 2013.

The scholars selected for stipends and brief descriptions of their papers follow:

Community Metrics: Guiding Localism in Communications Policy Work,
by Eric Freedman, Dean and Professor at the Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte. This project will increase understanding of how to measure local community media literacy and engagement. The project will guide policy makers and providers of local news and information in their assessment of the information needs of a local community and the creation and delivery of locally relevant content.

Designing a Virtual Peer Community for Students With Sensory Disabilities,
by Raja Kushalnagar, Assistant Professor in the Information and Computing Studies Department at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Rochester Institute of Technology. This project will increase understanding of how to enhance participation of students with sensory disabilities in science, technology, engineering and math learning. Specifically, the project will propose how to use online communities to support student preparation through mentoring, peer contacts, networking, and enhanced information accessibility. The project will inform policy makers and industry stakeholders about ways to promote outreach to marginalized populations through technology and mentoring.

Fernando Laguarda, director of the program and Vice President for External Affairs and Policy Counselor at Time Warner Cable, said, "We are pleased we continue to attract the best minds working on communications, media and technology policy issues and are particularly proud to be funding research in our home communities of Charlotte, NC and Rochester, NY. We look forward to learning from this work and making further contributions to the communications and technology policy debate."
