California Sues Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips

California Attorney General Kamala Harris announced today that she is suing Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips for failing to inspect and maintain more than 560 gasoline stations' storage tanks in the golden state .

According to a government press release, both corporations have improperly monitored, inspected, and maintained underground gasoline storage tanks since at least November 2006. The accusations include tampering with leak detection devices, failing to test backup containment systems, and failing to train employees on proper protocol .

According to a statement by Attorney General Harris:

The state's hazardous waste laws help protect our residents from contaminated groundwater. This lawsuit safeguards public health by ensuring proper maintenance of the tanks that store fuel beneath many California communities.


As of this writing, Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips have not issued any official responses. Calls to both companies went unanswered .
