Baker Member of Winning Design-Build Team on FDOT SPUI Project

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation (NYSE MKT:BKR), has been awarded a contract by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), as a member of the Superior Construction Company, LLC, Design-Build (D-B) team for a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) project at the U.S. 98/Cody Avenue intersection located in Okaloosa County, Florida. The project will commence on January 1, 2013. The contract has a 20-month term and a total design and construction value of $13.9 million.

The U.S. 98/Cody Avenue intersection is located at the main gate entrance of Hurlburt Field which is home to the US Air Force Special Operations Command. Many base personnel live off base and commute daily causing heavy traffic congestion at the intersection. The project will elevate U.S. 98 over Cody Avenue to provide congestion relief and provide improved access to the main entrance.

Specifically, Baker will provide design management and design services for roadway, drainage, structures, utilities, signing and pavement marking, signalization, lighting, ITS, and environmental permitting. Additionally, Baker will provide post-design services during the construction phase of the project. The signature feature of the project is a 191-foot, single-span, pre-tensioned, prestressed concrete girder bridge—the longest pre-tensioned concrete girder ever designed by Baker, and believed to be the first SPUI bridge in the country to be constructed from a single-span, pre-tensioned concrete girder design.

"We are very pleased to have been selected as part of the Superior D-B team," said Baker's Paul McIlree, P.E., project manager. "The selection represents our first major structure design-build project win with FDOT and provides an opportunity for Baker to demonstrate its broad capabilities to this valued client."
